In just the first 5 months of 2010, the site had already helped raise $3.2 million for relief for earthquake victims in Haiti. Bacon’s website is a subsidiary of Network for Good, which is a larger social networking site that has been around since 2001. Through it’s existence, Network for Good has helped raise over $400 million for over 50,000 non-profit organizations throughout the world! These types of sites are so successful because they make it easy for people to get connected to the world around them. As long as you have satellite internet access, you can easily find thousands of ways to get involved, and you can find hundreds of thousands of other like-minded people out there just like you. Whether people get involved through financial donations or through volunteer opportunities, operating costs are kept low because all anyone needs to get involved is a satellite internet connection. That means non-profit organizations are able to easily increase their resources and therefore their capacity, without having to spend large amounts of time or money recruiting volunteers or soliciting donations.

The incredibly innovative aspect of this site, is that it enables individuals to create projects to receive funding from the public, which makes the whole thing much more grassroots and less bureaucratic than similar sites. Instead of having to raise funds through an approved organization, individuals can try to raise money directly for their own projects, which they may normally have difficulty receiving funding for.
